Reaching Out in Sudan, Africa (R.O.S.A.) was formed in 2008 by two college students who had a vision of building a rehabilitation center for women victimized by the Darfur conflict. By 2009, over 2.7 million people had been displaced in Darfur due to the genocide, amongst them many women and children. R.O.S.A. was created to help the women who had been victimized in the conflict by building a rehabilitation community that provides medical attention, therapy, and education in addition to basic needs. Most importantly, R.O.S.A. hopes to empower the women by providing a sense of security and of normalcy.
By providing homes for the women, R.O.S.A. will help empower each woman start a new life. Through education and counseling, R.O.S.A. will smooth each woman’s transition back to society post conflict trauma.
R.O.S.A. is planning to begin construction in Sudan in 2011. The community will consist of multi room homes constructed from Eco-Domes. Resident doctors and therapists will be available for the women. Staff will consist of caring individuals from the US and Sudan. Ultimately, R.O.S.A. hopes to create a community of Sudanese women helping other Sudanese women.
